Rag Darbari is a Hindi (हिन्दी) novel written by Shrilal Shukla. It describes the political and social challenges one encountered in the villages of those times. Rangnath The protagonist, of the book Rag Darbari is an educated, idealistic and urban youth, who has a very monolithic view of how the Indian villages were in the early seventies and late sixties. He is a history scholar who goes on a holiday to his uncle’s village to escape the urban life for a while. Vaidyaji, His uncle is the manager of the local college and is the silent law of the land whose writ runs through the whole village. Most of his stalwart men occupy important positions in the village like the Sarpanch (Head of panchayat samiti) and police in charge of the local station.

Rag Darbari

The novel describes the degradation of moral values post-independence in the village life and is laced with great dark and wit humour. Rangnath’s notion of an ideal village is shattered by seeing petty corruption and politics dominating the day-to-day life in the village. The book Rag Darbari in one way is a mirror image of the rural life during those times.

About the Author

Shrilal Shukla was a Hindi writer known for his dark and satire humour. He wrote more than 25 books including Rag Darbari. His bestselling books are:-

He was born in Lucknow UP in 1925 and graduated from Allahabad University in 1947. He was a Provincial Service officer from UP (Uttar Pradesh). In 2005, he was awarded the Yash Bharati Samman by the UP Government and he received Padma Bhushan in 2008 for his contribution to Indian culture and literature. He won the highest Indian literary award i.e. Jnanpith Award in 2011 and died in the same year after a prolonged illness.
